BAIKONUR, KAZAKHSTAN: Astronaut Timothy Peake, set to become the first Briton to travel to the International Space Station, said on the eve of his departure that he would look down on Earth at Christmas time and think of his family — hopefully while tucking into some Christmas pudding himself.
The former army major — a European Space Agency flight engineer — is blasting off from Baikonur in Kazakstan on Tuesday with two American and Russian colleagues for a 171-day mission at the orbiting research outpost.
“We’ve been so busy focusing on this mission I forgot that Christmas is just a week away,” Peake told reporters at the Cosmonaut Hotel in Baikonur on Monday.
“We’ll be enjoying the fantastic view of planet Earth and our thoughts will be with everyone on Earth enjoying Christmas and with our friends and family.”
The 43-year-old added that he would be able to call his relatives from space to wish them a merry Christmas.

The experienced air pilot will become only the eighth Briton to enter the cosmos after Tuesday’s rocket launch, which is scheduled for around 1100 GMT.
He has vowed to take part in the London marathon from space on April 24, harnessed to a running machine on the ISS some 400 kilometres (250 miles) above Earth.
His fellow crew members, Russian space veteran Yuri Malenchenko and NASA’s Tim Kopra, have already spent 641 and 58 days in space respectively.
The trio will join up with the three astronauts already at the ISS — Scott Kelly of NASA and Russians Sergei Volkov and Mikhail Kornienko.

MUMBAI: India’s limited-overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was the first pick by the new Pune franchise while Rajkot chose batsman Suresh Raina at the Indian Premier League draft for the next two seasons on Tuesday.
The western Indian cities of Pune and Rajkot were named as home to two new franchises for the next two years, filling the void left by the two-year suspensions on the Chennai and Rajasthan franchises following an illegal betting scandal.
Players from the two suspended franchises were made available in the draft, allowing the two teams to pick five players each.
New Rising, a consortium led by Sanjiv Goenka, chairman of the RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, bagged the Pune team while mobile manufacturers Intex made a successful bid for Rajkot in a reverse bidding process, the Indian Cricket board (BCCI) said last week.
Pune, having made the most successful bid, got the first pick and went for the 34-year-old Dhoni, who led Chennai in all eight previous seasons of the IPL.
Australia captain Steve Smith, South Africa’s Faf du Plessis and India batsman Ajinkya Rahane and off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin were the other players selected by Pune.
New Zealand skipper Brendon McCullum will play for Rajkot, who also added Australia all-rounder James Faulkner, former West Indies captain Dwayne Bravo and India’s spin-bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
Both franchises will lose 390 million rupees ($5.82 million) from their total purse of 660 million for next year’s IPL auctions in which the remaining players from the suspended team will be added to the pool.

ITAHARI: The death toll in the burning chimney collapse at the New Jaya Nepal Brick Kilnlocated at Itahari of Sunsari district in eastern Nepal rose to seven while more than 25 were injured. Five of the victims are said to be Indian labourers.
Locals in the area have spoken of a scenario of confusion with workers running helter-skelter following a sudden collapse of the chimney. The impact of the falling chimney caused an emergence of huge fire ball with smoke bellowing from the site which spread to far lying areas.
The construction of the brick kiln chimney is reported to be faulty due to which it collapsed on the workers, killing seven, said DSP Chiranjibi Koirala at the District Police Office, Sunsari.
Among the dead include Garibalal Paswan (50), Mithilesh Paswan (35), Salun Miya (16), Saddam Hussain (15), and Rahul (12) from the Indian state of Bihar.
The dead also include Galadidevi Chaudhary (60) of Ekamba area of Itahari-16 and Shiva Narayan Chaudhary of Pakali of Itahari-20, according to Inspector Tika Bahadur Karki of Area Police Office, Pakali.
All seven bodies have been kept at the BP Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan.
Those who remained trapped under the debris of the chimney were rescued with help of an excavator, police and the locals, said Inspector Karki.
Among the injured condition of 18 is reported to be critical and they are being treated at emergency ward, doctors involved in the treatment said.
The death toll is expected to rise.
The workers with minor injuries were sent to health centres and institutes in Inaruwa and Itahari.
Police assume the technical fault related to the erection of the chimney as contributing to the tragedy. An investigation into the incident has been launched, police said.
SARLAHI: CPN-UML leader Madhav Kumar Nepal on Tuesday inaugurated a two-month long orientation on Nepal’s new constitution here in Hariban of Sarlahi, on Tuesday.
According to the CPN-UML leaders, the civil awareness programme aims at disseminating true information about the newly promulgated constitution and clear up the propaganda and misinformation about it.
With the motto — “Himal, Pahad, Tarai – kohi chhaina parai” — the drive is scheduled to be organised in different phases in 22 districts, stretching from Kanchanpur to Jhapa.
Senior leaders of the party, Ishwor Pokhrel and Pradeep Gyawali, among others were also present in the programme.
NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: Officials say a plane has rolled off a runway at Nashville International Airport, injuring eight people.
Southwest Airlines spokeswoman Emily Samuels said in an email Tuesday night that Flight 31 from Houston Hobby Airport to Nashville went off the taxiway around 5:20 pm as it approached the arrival gate.
She said the 133 passengers and five crew members evacuated the plane safely and were bused to the airport, where employees were helping them.
Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said the Boeing 737 rolled into grass and got stuck while taxiing to the gate. She said the FAA is investigating.
News media outlets quote fire department spokesman Brian Haas as saying eight people were transported to a hospital, most with minor injuries and one with chest pain.
No information about what caused the aircraft to leave the runway was immediately available.

As I’m driving down the road I see three young girls holding signs that just say “Beep”, “Happy Holidays” etc. So I drive by and do what anyone would do.. I beep and wave. As I look in my rearview I can see that they’re pointing at my truck (my all black pick up is pretty recognizable in our little country town). I go train and run my errands and over 3 HOURS later I’m driving back down our little backroad and the same three angels are standing by the side of the road – only this time they’re jumping up and down, waving and screaming as I drove by. I thought, “Did those signs say my name?”…”Should I turn around just in case?” I decide to hit the brakes and look in my rearview and in that very moment I see them going BONKERS! I flipped a U-turn and drove back to them. They were elated. So was I. These little angels waited outside for over 3 hours for me to hopefully drive back down their road.. their mom and dad came running out and we all exchanged hugs and took pics. I made sure I got a pic with my phone, wished them all Happy Holidays, got back in my truck and went on my way. The coolest part of this whole random (or maybe fateful) act is that by turning around I literally got to meet some of the sweetest and kindest little ladies and family I’d ever met. Kathmandu, December 15. The government has received Rs 59 billion out of the Rs 440 billion pledged by donors during the international donors’ conference on post-quake reconstruction few months ago. But not even a single paisa has been utilised so far.
Madhu Kumar Marasini, joint-secretary at Ministry of Finance, said that as of December 14, 2015, the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, China, International Monteray Fund (IMF) and Germany have signed agreements to back their pre-announced pledges.
According to Marasini, who heads the Foreign Aid division, the Japanese government will soon sign an agreement with the Nepali government to provide Rs 22.9 billion in assistance.
However, not a single paisa of the money has been spent, says the Ministry of Finance. The reason: the hi-level reconstruction authority which is supposed to carry out reconstruction work has not been formed yet.
Government figures show that Nepal needs Rs 700 billion to carry out reconstruction of structures affected by the April quakes. On June 25, 2015, the government hosted an international seminar in Kathmandu where donors pledged to provide Rs 440 billion to Nepal for reconstruction.
MANILA: Thousands of residents have been evacuated as Typhoon Melor slammed into the eastern Philippines, where flood- and landslide-prone communities are bracing for destructive winds, heavy rains and waves up to 4 meters (13 feet) tall. Classes and flights have also been suspended.
The government’s weather bureau said Monday that the typhoon is packing winds of 150 kilometers (93 miles) per hour and gusts of 185 kph (115 mph), carrying heavy to intense rains within its 300-kilometer (185-mile) diameter. It made landfall Monday morning in tiny Batag Island in the eastern Philippines, and a second landfall is expected in Sorsogon province.
Bernardo Alejandro, a regional civil defense official, says thousands of residents have already evacuated.
Kathmandu, December 15. The Chinese government is donating 20 electric buses to Nepal for use in the Kathmandu Valley, at a time when the country has been reeling under a shortage of petroleum products resulting from the Indian blockade. Sajha Yatayat will use the modern buses for mass transport.
Spokesperson for Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Gyanendra Karki, told Onlinekhabar: The Chinese government is giving 20 electric buses to Nepal through the Local Development Ministry.
These vehicles are meant for the KMC, which will use them for mass transport in the Kathmandu Valley through Sajha.
These buses can be operated by recharging batteries. A team from the KMC is heading to China for signing an agreement to this effect.
Meanwhile, the KMC is also making preparations to buy 10 more electric buses from China. In all, Nepal will bring in 30 electric buses from the northern neighbour.
According to Karki, the metropolis will operate these buses through Sajha Yatayat.
Karki said: We will not operate these buses. Sajha has the relevant experience, so these vehicles will operate under Sajha.
The buses will operate on trial basis at a time when there are talks about giving priority to electric vehicles amid a shortage of fuel resulting from the Indian blockade.
For promoting the use of electric vehicles, China has been imposing up to 67 per cent tax on petroleum products.
China has already given 1300 KL of petrol and is also donating induction stoves to Nepal.
KATHMANDU: Britain invited Speaker Onsari Gharti Magar for a visit to the United Kingdom.
Calling on the Speaker today, the British Ambassador to Nepal Richard Morris extended the invitation to her on the occasion of 200th anniversary of the Nepal-Britain ties.
According to Speaker’s Personal Secretary Suraj Kumar Dura, Gharti said she would decide over the invitation considering her schedules and engagement in various parliamentary affairs.
They also agreed to frequently exchange visits of lawmakers between two nations.
Morris had reached the Speaker’s Office in Singhadurbar to congratulate Gharti for her election to the post.
The duo, during the meeting, also discussed other aspects of the bilateral relation, Dura said.
Morris said he has expected the Nepal-Britain relations to consolidate further in the coming days.
He also expressed his concern over the National Reconstruction Authority Bill, currently pending at the Parliament.
Top officials of the Parliament Secretariat and representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present during the meeting.
Nov 25, 2015- The Metropolitan Police Crime Division has raided 19 pump (fuel) stations in Kathmandu Valley which were found to be tampering with the meter and duping customers for around a year.
The MPCD made public 13 mechanics and petrol pump owners, including four Indian nationals, who had been using tricks to dispense less fuel than the volume read by the meter. In the process, they cheated customers 200 to 300 millilitre petrol or diesel on sale of every five litres.
On Tuesday, the MPCD raided two more refuelling centres in the Valley—Prabin Oil, Gatthaghar and Kamukhya Petrol Pump Koteshwor. Prabin Oil owner Prabin Shrestha is absconding while the charges against the Koteshwor-based owner are yet to be known.
The four Indians apparently brought in equipment such as remote controllers, receivers and switches and installed them at petrol pumps in Ekantakuna, Chapagaun and Balkumari in Lalitpur and Balaju, Chabahil and Samakhusi in Kathmandu.
Nashim Siddiqui, 44, of Bihar, India, who has worked as a technician with various fuel centres in Nepal for the past 25 years, is believed to be the mastermind. Police arrested Siddiqui and his team mates who helped the authorities figure out the pumps that had been cheating customers.
Other arrestees have been identified as Ayub Alam, 35, of Gorakhpur, India; Hamid Hussain ‘Mintu’, 25, and Mohammad Abrar of Bihar and Shek Imtiaj, 35, of Rautahat. They are all technicians abetting the pump owners in the heist.
Police identified the entrepreneurs as Sailendra Nath Bade, 40, of Gayatri Devi Oil Stores, Ekantakuna; Shiva Timilsina, 35, of Mahalaxmi Bishwokarma Traders, Chapagaun; Gopal Maharjan, 48, of Unique Fuel Centre, Balkumari; Yunus Pradhan, 34, of Tri-Shakti Fuel Centre, Sanepa; Kalyan Khadka, 47, of Crystal Fuel Suppliers, Balaju; Punyaram Bakhadeya, 49, of Bhaktapur Fuel Centre; and Sitaram Ghimire, 32, of New Bangalamukhi Oil Stores, Sano Bharyang.
Police are hunting for owners of four refuelling centres who are at large following the raid. They have been identified as Buddhi Ratna Maharjan and Dipak Thapaliya of Rajdhani Oil, Gopi Krishna; Amir Lama of New Pushpanjali Oil Traders, Jay Bageshwori; Rajiv Sharma of Puja Kothi Oil Store, New Bageshwori; Tilak Shrestha of Divya Suppliers, Samakhusi.
Five other filling stations have been sealed and are under watch, said the MPCD, without disclosing their names. SSP Sarvendra Khanal, chief of the police division, said the technicians would install chips to be used by the owners to control fuel flow remotely. “The devices used in manual pumps could be removed by the owners themselves while digital dispensers needed technicians for installing and removing them,” said SSP Khanal.
The police were assisted by the Nepal Bureau of Standards and Metrology in the raid. SSP Khanal said the owners would be charged for cheating and black marketing.

Nov 26, 2015- A sedition case was filed
against Bollywood actor-producer Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao on
Wednesday in a Bihar court based on his statement on increasing
intolerance in the country.
Lawyer Sudhir Kumar Ojha filed the sedition case in the chief judicial magistrate court in Muzaffarpur district.
“I have filed a sedition case against Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran
Rao over their statement that intolerance has increased in the country,
as it created bad environment and has defamed the country,” Ojha said.
At an awards event in New Delhi on Monday, Aamir spoke of “growing despondency” in India for the last six to eight months.
He said: “When I sit at home and talk to Kiran, for the first time
she said, ‘Should we move out of India?’ Now that’s a very disastrous
and a big comment to make to me.”
His statement drew widespread criticism even as many defended him.
Ojha said the court has accepted his complaint for hearing later this week.
Meanwhile, Aamir on Wednesday clarified his stance on “intolerance”,
saying he and his wife Kiran Rao love India and won’t leave the country.
He added: “Anyone implying the opposite has either not seen my interview or is deliberately trying to distort what I have said.”
